Global Forest Type
This dataset classifies the forest type present for the year 2020, with global coverage at 10 m spatial resolution. Forested pixels are assigned one of 3 forest types.
Frameworks
Use cases
- EUDR land cover change detection for commodity deforestation risk
- SBTN natural lands baseline and conversion monitoring
- Land use change analysis for corporate deforestation commitments
- Habitat conversion screening across supply chain sourcing areas
Who uses this
EUDR compliance specialists and biodiversity analysts use the JRC forest type classification — distinguishing primary, naturally regenerating, and planted forests — to qualify deforestation risk and assess ecological significance. Nature risk teams use planted-versus-natural forest distinctions when scoring biodiversity sensitivity. Carbon project developers use it to determine whether reforestation activity qualifies as afforestation versus forest restoration under voluntary carbon standards.
